The "Republic of the Skull", Vincent Brugeas (Script), Ronan Toulhoat (Drawing, Colors)

The Bahamas, 1718.
The pirate captain Sylla, assisted by his quartermaster Olivier de Vannes and his men, takes possession of an English ship. Against all odds, instead of massacring the crew, the pirates offer to join them. And this, in the name of the principles which are theirs: freedom, democracy and fraternity.
Olivier de Vannes, who had become captain of the newly captured ship, came across a frigate flying the Portuguese flag. He seized it. The ship seems abandoned, yet black slaves who have mutinied are on board. At their head, Queen Maryam.
Paced by Olivier's reflections in his logbook, this story confronts two worldviews: that of the pirates revolting against the established order and that of a queen reigning without sharing. But a common enemy may well give rise to an alliance...
A fresh and historically accurate look at the world of piracy. Contrary to popular belief, pirates were the opposite of the bloodthirsty brute. Decisions were debated and voted upon. Beyond this formidable human adventure with memorable battle scenes and multiple adventures, an intelligent reflection appears in the background that resonates with the societal conflicts of our time.
