How did this image come about? Miki explains!
New Ramen Shop is actually the real ramen restaurant in her neighbourhood, in the Tokyo suburb of Chiba. It is family run and serves good, simple, old-fashioned ramen
As she walked past the shop one afternoon, it suddenly started to rain in the sunshine; the door was left open, the smell of rain on the pavement and the light glistening, that's how The New Ramen Shop in a Sunshower was born.
A sunny shower has a real meaning in Japan, it brings good luck and is called "the marriage of the fox". In Japanese folklore, rain purified the soil and the fox was a symbol of a good harvest. People believed that a fox had taken on human form.
So the three men in the picture eating their bowl of ramen are symbolically three foxes who have just attended the wedding.
