Leaving the Station is part of a book-in-progress called "Norman Ruffle on Monday", a personal project of Miki's which she hopes to complete in the near future. Her main character is Norman Ruffle, a man in a hat who is interested in storytelling sound environments.
How did 'Leaving the Station' come about? Miki explains!
No matter how you travel, night travel is always romantic. It evokes an endless expanse of time and a dream of adventure.
I used to like to hang out at night at Union Station in Denver. Sometimes I would see Amtrak (a famous railroad company in the United States). Passengers would gather to buy tickets and sit at the restaurant bar to have a cup of coffee. I was excited to see the destination written on the board.
When I was lying on my bed at home, I could hear the Amtrak whistle from a distance. Is this train going east to Chicago? Or is it going west to California? I could feel the vastness of the continent only through that sound. I fell asleep imagining a train travelling alone over a vast territory with light streaming out of the window illuminating the prairie.
