José-Luis Munuera

José-Luis Munuera was born in 1972 in southern Spain. After studying fine arts at the University of Granada, he became a cartoonist of "historietas", as they say in Spanish. But, like the written press, the comic strip sector went through a difficult period in the 1990s, and José Luis took a trip to Angoulême.

There he met Joann Sfar who wrote the three stories of "Potamoks" (Delcourt). The success being slow, the two authors decide to propose their work to another publisher: Dargaud. This is how the adventures of Merlin, the famous magician always accompanied by Tartine, the ogre, and Jambon, the pig, came about. The series found its audience, and when Sfar no longer had time to write the scripts, Jean-David Morvan took over. It was the beginning of a long artistic collaboration...

Munuera and Morvan then launched the delirious "Sir Pyle S. Culape" (Soleil), then, with Philippe Buchet, they imagined "Nävis" (Delcourt), a fantastic series for children.

During this time, the two companions are contacted by the Dupuis publishing house which proposes them to tell, in their turn, the adventures of one of their favorite heroes, Spirou. "Paris-sous-Seine" was released in 2004.

Since then, Munuera has had a string of successes with series for adults - "Sortilèges" (Dargaud; script by Jean Dufaux) or "Fraternity" (Dargaud; script by Juan Diaz Canales) - as well as for young people - Walter le loup (Dargaud), "Les Campbell" (Dupuis) or the tribute to the master Jean Roba, "P'tit Boule & Bill" (Dargaud).
